My Eggs Are Broken - Work in progress
My Eggs Are Broken is a documentary project visualising the effects of Endometriosis, a non-infectious and non-contagious condition suffered by about 10% of women of reproductive age.
Being an Endometriosis sufferer myself, I used my own experiences as a starting point for this project as well as conducting extensive research and by interviewing other women living with the illness. Other than the common symptoms, the issues raised by all the women interviewed included isolation, long waiting times for care and the feeling of not being listened to by doctors.
Through this work I wish to increase awareness, to medical professionals who are often unequipped and unspecialised as to the difficulties faced by so many women all over the world, as well as to the undiagnosed sufferers. Women themselves have often not heard about the illness and a significant number of healthcare professionals have grave misconceptions about the symptoms. Many women cannot get help in a timely manner, or at all.
I have approached the subject through conceptual impressions of the condition, utilising constructed imagery, and depicted my own personal experiences with a more representational approach. I use symbolism and metaphorical reflections to examine and explain this complex subject. The fundamental question I wish to raise is the human right, women’s right, to quality of life which needs to be taken seriously.
